Hey guys! I have something a little different that I wanted to share today. This is a brand that I heard about recently and was excited to test out, and I wanted to share the results. Mary Jane's Apothecary is a brand here in California that specializes in CBD infused bath and body products that include balms, lotions, foot soaks, bath bombs and lip butters. Before I get into the review, I want to explain what CBD is and the reason I wanted to try it out.
CBD (short for cannabidiol) is one of the main chemicals found in marijuana and is responsible for the therapeutic properties that the plant is known for. From the little bit of research I've done, this chemical has been found to help alleviate symptoms of pain and inflammation, gastric distress, anxiety, depression, epilepsy, and can also used as a part of cancer treatments. There are no psychoactive effects found in CBD, so this will not give you that stoney boloney effect that you get from smoking marijuana itself. The chemical that creates the high is called THC and is different from CBD. If you want the benefits from the plant minus the high, then CBD is the way to go.
There are different ways to use CBD. It can be vaped, ingested as a pill, applied topically through balms and lotions, sprayed into the mouth or applied under the tongue. The dose is measured in milligrams and will vary depending on the product. I ordered the 420 Buzzy Balm in Soothing Heat, which contains 500 mg of CBD in a one ounce tube.
The reason I ordered this product is for my oldest daughter rather than for myself. She has been diagnosed with a rare inflammatory disease called Chronic Recurrent Multifocal Osteomyelitis, or CRMO for short. What a name, right? Basically it's a long term (chronic) condition that causes painful inflammation and lesions in the bones. The long bones of the arms and legs are the most common sites, although the disease is not limited to these locations. The disease goes through periods of flare ups and remissions (recurrent) and multiple bones can be affected (multifocal). With my daughter, her left arm and left knee/upper shin area are the problem areas, and these bones look like Swiss cheese under the X-ray machine. The areas are permanently enlarged (the difference in size between the left and right sides is significant and you can see it with the naked eye), very painful at times, and the bones are brittle and more prone to fractures. She's like a 15 year old with the body of a 90 year old. Because this is an inflammatory condition, the first treatment is over the counter anti-inflammatories like Naproxen. This gives me concern though - the effects this may have on her liver and kidneys over a long period of time, her having to leave class to take her medicine at the nurses office, and the pain relief is minimal. Imagine taking ibuprofen for a broken bone...it's not going to do much for pain, right? Opiates like Vicodin may be an option for pain relief, but we'd rather not go that route.
I started hearing about CBD products in a Facebook group last month. After seeing so many reviews from people who have experienced significant pain relief and improved quality of life after using CBD, I started looking into it. I admittedly didn't have too much faith that a plant could do more than modern medicine, but it was worth a try. This brand was highly recommended and came with a fast turn around time, so I went ahead with an order. Total turn around time was 9 business days, and I received a code to use - 10% off all future orders with an additional 25% off if I leave a review on the website. I plan on doing that because this is a product I'd reorder.

The first thing I notice is the odor, which smells like a blend of pot and cinnamon. It's pleasant and I like it, but my daughter isn't a fan. To be fair though, she is picky about scents and really only enjoys one or two things from B&BW. The texture is firm to the touch but glides easily over the skin, leaving behind a green-colored waxy residue. I want to keep it on her skin for as long as possible instead of it soaking into her clothes and bed sheets, so I apply it to the painful areas and cover with Saran Wrap. She then places a heating pad over the area. The blend I chose for her was Soothing Heat, which is supposed to create a warming sensation on the skin that helps to stimulate blood flow. She didn't notice any warmth once the product was applied though; instead, she said that it was cooling. I assume that's because of the peppermint, eucalyptus and camphor.
As for performance, she's very happy with this balm. Her pain is gone within minutes and she's able to rest comfortably without the need for over the counter pills. Her pain tends to act up in the evenings, which the doctor explained is because she is resting and not distracted by day-to-day activities. I've lost count of the number of times she wakes up crying in the middle of the night, and a few days before placing this order, she needed help getting off the toilet because her leg was acting up. Normally her medicine would improve the pain to a more tolerable level, but the relief is minimal and it takes time to work. The Buzzy Balm takes care of that within 5-10 minutes, and she's able to sleep better and walk easier. There is some lingering stiffness and soreness afterwards, but it's much better than when she only takes her medicine. She still takes the Naproxen for the inflammation, but when she needs immediate pain relief, she now asks for the balm and grabs the Saran Wrap.
I wanted to try this out on myself, so I took it for a test drive one night. That dreaded monthly friend brings along lower back cramps, so I swiped the Buzzy Balm a few times over my hip area and waited. Immediately I noticed that cooling sensation that my daughter described, and within a few minutes the cramps diminished. I could still feel an occasional cramp here and there but the relief was significant with no side effects.
We're both happy with how well this product works, and my daughter has been much better off since using it. Her pain is more manageable, she sleeps better at night, and even her mood seems to improve after using it. Would I reorder this? Absolutely!
